Throwback Thursday: We Want Six!

We dug back deep into the KHSAA Photo files to find the last three state championship teams and they all happened to be St. Xavier… hmm imagine that!  We could not locate the 2009 and 2010 state championship pictures, but those too were of course the Tiger Tennis team.

Enjoy and here’s to adding another picture to the collection later today!

Tiger Tennis is the all-time most winningest program in KHSAA Tennis by a lot.  With over 53 singles/doubles championships and 22 team championships with a current 5 peat, there is no doubt that St. Xavier sets the tone for the state on the courts.  Brandon Lancaster is one of the favorites heading into this week’s competition at the University of Kentucky and he looks to join a list of names that are well respected in the world of Tennis in Kentucky.  Guys like Sean Donohue, who has the most recent singles championship in 2012 and Tim Cooper who won 4 straight state championship singles titles from 1967-70 are what make this program so special.  As only a Junior, Lancaster has a chance at two titles the next two years after finishing as runner-up last season.

Tiger Tennis wins Section Two Tournament

2014 Section Two Tournament Champions

Tiger Tennis defeated Trinity 3-0 to win the 2014 Section Two Tennis Tournament.  It ended up being an all day event due to inclement weather that pushed the start time of both rounds back.

In the first round, St. Xavier matched up with the Region 5 champion Marion County, who they defeated 5-0.  Victories came from Patrick Koshewa (6-1, 6-1), Nick Waldeck (6-2, 6-2), Coleman Cox (6-0, 6-0), Andrew Willett/Nick Quinones (6-0, 6-0) and Matt Graft/Devin Kelly (6-0, 6-0) to advance the Tigers into the championship to face arch-rival Trinity for the third time this season.

Seven hours later than scheduled, the Section Two Tournament Finals started at the Brown Family Tennis Center.  Brandon Lancaster started things out with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jack Allen, even though he was feeling under the weather all day long.  Freshman Drew Singerman followed quickly with a 6-0, 6-0 win of his own defeating Trinity’s John May to put the Tigers within one win of the title.

The all senior doubles team of Coleman Cox and Nick Quinones defeated Austin Strause and Tommy McConville of Trinity 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the championship for the Tigers at about 9:30 PM.  Per KHSAA rules, when one team wins three courts, the match stops and that is just what St. Xavier did in timely fashion!

This was the third victory for the Tigers over Trinity this season bringing the overall match record to 26-0 against the Shamrocks in 2014.  Pretty impressive if  you ask me!

Tiger Tennis continues its quest for a sixth straight team state championship this week in Lexington at the University of Kentucky’s Boone/Downing Tennis Complex starting on Wednesday.
