Former Tiger Bobby Schmitt named All-American

by Adam Pruiett, Assistant Bellarmine SID

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The 2014 lacrosse season began for Bellarmine University’s Bobby Schmitt with a place on the Tewaaraton Award watch list and now it ends with his inclusion on the Division I All-America team

On Thursday, the junior long stick midfielder was recognized as an honorable-mention All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. Schmitt becomes the second All-American selection at Bellarmine since the inception of the lacrosse program in 2005. Last season, Dillon Ward capped his senior campaign by being tabbed as the third-team goalie.

The All-America accolade follows Schmitt’s appearance on the All-Eastern College Athletic Conference first team after he was voted to the second team last season and to the All-Rookie Team as a freshman. The ECAC also honored the Louisville native and St. Xavier graduate this season as its Lacrosse Specialist of the Year.

Schmitt gained national attention heading into the season when his name appeared on the Tewaaraton Award watch list. The Tewaaraton Award is college lacrosse’s equivalent of college football’s Heisman Trophy.

Schmitt led the Knights in ground balls with 36 and in caused turnovers with 19. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound standout scooped up three ground balls or more in eight of the team’s 12 games, including a season-best five on March 4 in a 12-8 win over Detroit. He tallied a season-high three caused turnovers on three occasions – against Michigan (3/15), Fairfield (3/29) and High Point (4/5).

Schmitt also tallied seven assists, tying him for the fourth-best mark on the team. He recorded an assist in each of the team’s first six games.

The voting was completed by the ECAC Lacrosse League head coaches, who could not cast a ballot for their own student-athletes.

After helping Bellarmine to its first season above .500 since 2010, Schmitt–a long stick midfielder–has been chosen as the ECAC Lacrosse Specialist of the Year. Schmitt appeared in all 12 of the Knights’ games in 2014, starting 10 contests and handing out seven assists from his longstick midfield position.

He leads the ECAC with 19 caused turnovers and also finished in the top-10 in ground balls (36). Schmitt earned All-ECAC First Team honors this season, marking the third time in his career he has garnered All-ECAC laurels. Wesley received the pass from none other than his former Tiger teammate Bobby Schmitt.

Both Wesley and Schmitt are juniors for Bellarmine and were a part of the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 Tiger Lacrosse state championship teams. Their next home game is March 1st against Furman University at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
