It didn’t get started at it’s 8:30 scheduled time by a long shot, but St. Xavier Baseball’s tilt with Region 2 Champion Union County was a thrilling success. It was yet another fantastic game in a State Tournament that, with the top team in the state, Tates Creek, losing in the first round, has become as wide open as any in recent memory. The Tigers defeated the Braves by a final line of 2-1 to survive and advance one step closer to their first State Championship since 1981.

St. X put the first run of the game on the board quickly in the first inning. Andrew McCormick reached base off of a Union County error, and later came home when Hayden Ford came through with an RBI single the next at-bat.

The next five innings turned out to be a war of attrition, as neither side could manufacture any offense. Braves starting pitcher Kyle Griffin, if not for Union County losing, would have been the story of the night; he was throwing gas all night and had Tiger batters guessing throughout the game.

After Union County had forced across a run to knot up the game at 1 run a piece in the top of the sixth, the heart of the Tiger lineup stepped to the plate to attempt to break the tie again. First, Andrew McCormick singled to lead off the inning. Hayden Ford then grounded into a fielder’s choice, and replaced McCormick on first base with one out. Ford then stole second, and the winning run was set up perfectly.

After Braves’ third baseman Micah Brown made a stellar diving stab of Brandon Blaser’s liner, Miles Lee trotted to the plate with two outs.

Lee scorched a liner right back at Brown; only this time, Brown couldn’t handle it. Ford scored from second, junior relief pitcher Scott Spurlock shut the door the next inning, and the rest is history.

Next up for St. X is a date with the Johnson Central Golden Eagles, who upset Tates Creek earlier in the day. First pitch is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Thursday right back at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
