Tiger Track and Field Wins Clash of the Classes at Walton Verona
The team started the day with a win in the 4×800. The team of Grady Shiftlet, Nick Poole, Ryan Guenthener, and Cooper Marchal finished with a time of 8:21.35, the top time in the state this year.
The distance team would keep their strong performance going with a slew of top finishers. Ryan Guenthener placed 3rd in the 800, Grady Shiftlet placed 4th in the 800, Thomas Knepshield placed 4th in the 1600, Clint Sherman placed 4th in the 3200, and Will Perrone placed 8th in the 3200.
On the sprints side, the Tigers were just as successful. Beck O’Daniel and Jax Goldberg had great days, placing in the Top 3 in all four of their events. O’Daniel started his day with a 3rd place finish in the 110 Hurdles. He would then team up with Goldberg, and also with Ricky Garr and Zack Martinez in the 4×200 Relay who placed 2nd. In the 4×100, O’Daniel, Goldberg, Garr, and Max Masterson won the event with a time of 44.92 seconds, almost a second faster than the 2nd lance finisher. O’Daniel finished his day with a 3rd place finish in the 300 Hurdles.
Other top finishes in the sprints included Garr placing 4th in the 200 and 5th in the 100. Lastly, the 4×400 team of Goldberg, Shiftlet, Poole, and Tanner Boling placed 3rd.
The field events would round out a successful day for the Tigers. GJ Wellinghurst placed 2nd in the shotput with a new PR or 47’8″. Wellinghurst would also go on to place 8th in discus. Jax Goldberg picked up another win in the high jump at a height of 5’10. Max Masterson placed 2nd in the long jump. Lastly, James Bryant placed 3rd in the triple jump.
Overall, the Tigers won the team title by 42 points over Covington Catholic. The team will look to carry on their strong performances to South Carolina next weekend for the BoJangles Invitational in Columbia.
