#2 Michael Meredith’s Hail Mary Catch

With the year coming to a close, we take time to reminisce on the past year in sports. 2016 has been filled with countless games, memories, and championships that have added to the legacy of St.X’s athletic excellence. Now, as the crystal ball counts down to midnight, WSTX Sports would like to do a countdown of our own over the next few days. Let’s countdown the Top 10 Moments in Tiger Sports for the year of 2016!

One play can change the attitude of a whole game.

With the game starting to get out of hand, Male was leading 21-7, and the Tigers were on their heels.

Desmond Ridder and Co. were running the two-minute drill to keep the game close going into the half, but the drive stalled and they were forced to punt. However, a Male penalty kept the drive alive. The Tiger Offense stepped up to the line at the Bulldogs’ 39 with 3.4 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

Ridder dropped back and launched a prayer downfield, the ball was tipped, and it fell into the waiting arms of Michael Meredith to make the score 21-14 going into the half.

What was so special about this play is that it quite literally changed the season for the Tigers.

They would go on to win the game, clinching the district title for the first time since 2009. It ended a four game losing streak to Male. Lastly, it gave the Tigers three straight home games in the playoffs, which was a big reason why the Tigers made it to the state semi-finals for the first time since 2009.

While the come from behind win against Lexington Catholic was the biggest comeback in 6A Football history, the Tigers’ comeback win against Male had so much more on the line. Which is why Michael Meredith’s Hail Mary Catch is by far my favorite moment of the Tiger Football season.
