Tiger Golf leaves no doubt in 37 shot State Championship win

2015 Golf State Champions

This team is really good. We knew that coming into this weekend though. On Tuesday and Wednesday, this Tiger Golf team went from being one of 20 Tiger Golf State Championship teams to being arguably the best of the bunch. That’s what happens when you win state for the 2nd straight year with a record breaking 19 under par score along with their 37 shot win over Franklin County.

Allen Hamilton and Mike Sass led the way with a two day 7 under par performance and finished tied for 3rd. Matt Liston (-4), Billy Basham (E) and Drew Kiehl (+1) followed behind, as they all finished top 15 in the state.

Final Team Scores:
1. Saint Xavier (-19)
2. Franklin County (+18)
3. Mason County (+22)
4. Owensboro Catholic (+28)
5. Union County (+31)

In the individual race, Hamilton double bogeyed hole #12 and dropped back into a tie for 1st at -7. Hamilton had birdie chances on both 17 and 18 but were both missed slightly to the right.

Sass was 5 back from the leaders heading to hole #14. Sass would go on to birdie 14, 15, 17 and 18 to finish in a tie for 3rd with teammate Hamilton at -7 and to finish one shot off the leaders.

This team is definitely one of the best golf teams this state has ever seen, and it may very well be the best. Tiger Golf didn’t just beat the previous state record of 579 by Trinity in 2003, they continually crushed it into the ground until they couldn’t see it anymore with their final score of 557.

There won’t be a golf team like this for quite some time. They started the Tiger Sports season off right with the first state championship of the year. We all know it won’t be the last.
