1 Month to Kickoff
One month from tonight, Tiger Football will take the field and kickoff the 2015 season at Lexington Catholic against Henry Clay in the Bluegrass Bowl. College football is growing close, which means high school football is even closer.
The Tigers are now in serious preperation mode for the season as practice is in full swing. New KHSAA rules expand the amount of time before they begin practicing in full equipment, so the heavy hitting hasn’t quite begun, yet. The dog days of summer are here and the heat and humidity has increased, but that won’t stop the football team from getting ready for a tough week one opponent.
The Blue Devils of Henry Clay have a really hungry and athletic team that features one of the top players in the state in Devonte Robinson, a University of Kentucky commit. The kid is a stud and is one of the fastest dudes you’ll ever see. Not to mention he’s over six foot tall and will lock down any receiver he’s lined up across from.
Challenge accepted by Colin O’Daniel, Austin Eisert, Conner Oliver and the rest of the wide receiver corps of St. Xavier. Those guys will have to step up and get open for one of two guys on August 28. Ahh, yes I said one of two guys. There is still a QB battle going on for the Tigers. A.J. Breit, the senior, and Desmond Ridder, the junior are going head to head in practice every day to impress the coaches and give them a reason to appoint them the guy. How well each picks up new offensive coordinator Dave Nurnberg’s offense could be the key to getting the gig.
The Tiger Defense looks to be stout with Logan Butler anchoring the middle of the field. Look for defensive coordinator Bart Bruner to move him around, so it makes it harder for teams to lock in on Butler and stop his penetration into the backfield. Ethan Adams is also a name that should be a household one by the end of 2015. The rising senior is an animal that gets after opposing quarterbacks. If he can stay healthy a little longer than he did last season, look for a breakout year from the big defensive linemen.
School is almost here again, but we can avoid the countdown to putting our ties back on by instead counting down to the road trip to Lexington for the first game of what should be a fun football season.
