WSTX Sports’ 2015 Summer Calendar

The 2014-2015 sport’s season is over, and summer has begun. While the Tiger Sports landscape may seem bleak over the next three months, I went through the calendar and raked up plenty of events to keep us entertained from now until kick off at Brother Thomas More Stadium in August.

Spray on some sunscreen and come along. I’ll show you.

June 6: The Belmont Stakes

This has nothing to do with St. X sports, but we do have the chance to see the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. American Pharaoh is also Louisville based, so we can cheer him on for that reason alone.

June 8: Cooper Mussellman’s U.S. Open Qualifier

Former Tiger Golfer Cooper Mussellman will be looking to qualify for this year’s US Open at Chambers Bay. At this Section Qualifier, Mussellman will play 36 holes in one day. It is meant to be a test of skill and endurance. Their will only be a handful of available spots at each site. The number is determined by the quality and quantity at each location.

Musselman will most likely be playing in one of the two locations in Ohio which is either Springfield or Columbus or in Memphis, TN.

June 22-24: Basketball Showcase held at the Wills Center

The Tiger Basketball team will host a Basketball Showcase featuring teams from all over the state right before Dead Period. It will give us an early look at this year’s Tiger Basketball team.

June 24: Nominees announced for the 2015 EXPYS

The EXPY Awards nominees will be released on June 24th this year. An EXPY Award is an accolade presented by WSTX Sports to recognize individual and team athletic achievement and other sports-related performance during the past school year. Voting will last for three weeks so make sure to get your vote in for your favorite athletes and teams.

June 24 & 25: Tiger Football 7 on 7 Passing Skills Camp

The next generation of Tigers will participate at this two day camp put on by the Tiger Football team.

July 4: America’s Birthday

The 4th of July falls on a Saturday this year which gives us even more time for picnics, fireworks and watching the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.

July 15: The EXPY Awards

Our annual awards will be released the night of the ESPN’s annual ESPY awards. Will your vote be the deciding factor?

There will be 7 on 7 games once again this year. We will let you know who the Tiger Football team is playing in those games as soon as we find out.

Summer is over on August 14th, but the Fall Sports begin as well with Tiger Football hosting Simon Kenton in a scrimmage.

August 15: Tiger Cross Country Alumni Run

The Tiger Cross Country team will host their annual Alumni Run on August 15th. The Run takes place on the same day as the current Tiger Runners race against Manual.
