Tiger Baseball still No. 1 + C-J’s Preview
Tiger Baseball has retained their No. 1 spot in this week’s Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association’s Top 20. Coach Porta’s Tigers are on a roll with only one loss thus far in the 2015 campaign. They fell to No. 2 Lexington Catholic in the finals of the Catholic Invitational on the Knights’ home field, but that is the only slip up on what has been a great start to defending the 2014 state championship.
The Tigers will have a Top-5 matchup on their hands tomorrow evening as St. Xavier travels to PRP to take on the Panthers and the No. 5 ranked team in the state. This will be a big game for the Tigers to see how they stock up next to another great Kentucky team.
Take a look at this week’s Top 20:
1. St. Xavier
2. Lexington Catholic
3. McCracken County
4. Madison Central
5. Pleasure Ridge Park
7. South Warren
8. Daviess County
9. Pulaski Southwestern
12. South Laurel
15. West Jessamine
16. Johnson Central
18. North Bullitt
19. Tates Creek
The Courier-Journal’s Jason Frakes published a short preview of the Tigers this season and you can read the whole thing by clicking the link below, but here is a short preview. Nothing we haven’t heard before, St. X is the team to beat.
Coming off its sixth state championship, as well as its fourth Seventh Region title in a row, St. Xavier baseball coach Andy Porta knows his team will get each opponent’s best shot this season.
“It puts a huge bull’s-eye on our backs,” he said.
The Tigers will be a tough target to take down, though. St. X returns 15 players, including four position starters, from the 30-10 team that beat Simon Kenton 5-2 in last year’s final at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington.
“These kids know how much work it takes to get back and repeat,” Porta said.
